As we saw recently at Royal Birkdale, the Open Championship is as much about the Links challenge than anything else, with brutal weather and sometimes even more brutal rough, and this weeks Senior Open will be no different.
As the event heads for another country in the United Kingdom from the 2016 edition in Carnoustie, eventually won by Paul Broadhurst, Wales is this years host and the wonderful Royal Porthcawl is the perfect sea-side setting.
Gary has traditionally played well on Links courses and has enjoyed the challenge of the hard fast ground and windy weather as he controls his game around a difficult track. In 2013 Gary enjoyed his best finish at a Senior Open, in a tie for 11th and last year he finished 27th at Carnoustie, another strong finish in a star studded ‘major’. Already off to a strong start this season he will be keen to get another good week under his belt as he aims for the top 20 once more on the final season ending Order of Merit table.
The event begins on Thursday 27th July (a four day event) and he plays alongside Carl Suneson and Wes Short Jr teeing off at 10.50am.
