Due to Gary's reputation on the course as an amateur he soon established himself as a Walker Cup regular for team Great Britain and Ireland. In total Gary played in the Walker Cup 6 times and was on the winning side 4 times.

During his time with the Walker Cup team Gary was fortunate enough to play alongside some of the most talented golfers around including Luke Donald, Paul Casey, Justin Rose and Olly Fisher to name but a few. Gary was also fortunate enough to play against many talented American stars of the future and often came out on the winning side, including his famous victories over world number 1 and golfing legend Tiger Woods and rising American star Anthony Kim. Gary is joint third of the all time matches played in for team GB with 19 appearances.
