Gary Rounds off Special Season in Style

The European Senior Tour drew to a close over this weekend at the MCB Tour Championship in Mauritius where the top 48 professionals from the Order of Merit battled it out for the coveted Tour Championship title.

After a season of uncertainty, having finished outside the top 20 on the Senior Tour Order of Merit in 2015, Gary couldn’t plan a schedule for the season which made planning for tournaments extremely difficult. However he rose to the challenge and played in his first event of the season at the SSE Enterprise Wales Senior Open. Despite finishing in a tie for 31st it was a positive sign that Gary may become eligible for most events on the calendar and be able to give himself the best chance of achieving full playing status for 2017.

More success was soon to follow where only a week later in Jersey at the Acorn Jersey Open, Gary got into a playoff for the title with Ian Woosnam and eventual winner Gordon Manson. Whilst both Gary and Ian were defeated by a third hole birdie, the second place finish was even more positive news for Gary and the €21,000 prize money was a major step forward in assuring himself of playing rights in 2017. With a sparse 2016 calendar on the European Senior Tour, Gary had to wait nearly a month for his next competitive outing, however when it came at the Swiss Senior Open, Gary was fully prepared. Having never finished outside the top 20, including 5 top 10’s, this event is a favourite of Gary’s and a 5th place in 2016 was a particular highlight.

With a subsequent 5th place at the Scottish Senior Open, 6th at the Paris Legends and a season ending 6th at the MCB Tour Championship in Mauritius this week, Gary finished in 13th on the Order of Merit and has secured full playing rights for the 2017 European Senior Tour season, a fantastic achievement securing Gary’s pre-season goal.

Gary would like to say a big thank you to all of his sponsors and supporters from the 2016 season and throughout his career, here’s to more success in 2017.
